A primary goal of this site is to enable users to browse and visualize the collection of Darwin Core records with close to real-time interaction. In order to achieve this sort of performance it is necessary to cache a copy of specimen records from the participating collections, and much of the underlying infrastructure of this site is dedicated to the gathering, collation, and fast acces to those data. The user interface, the part you can see now, is a relatively minor part of the whole system.
The site is built entirely from open source software tools such as Python, Django, Apache SOLR, MySQL, jQuery and a few others. A considerable proportion of the system involves custom implementation. The project is maintained at http://fishnet.ecoforge.net.
